NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FEDERAL RETIREES WESTERN MANITOBA BRANCH MB30 GENERAL MEETING January 21, 2020 Board of Directors Attendees: Garnet Shearer, Linda Dueck, Brad Kelso, Wendy Jarvin, Jane Brunet, Barry Caswell, Dorothy Caswell. 1. Call to Order: On behalf of Brett Turner, Garnet Shearer called the meeting to order. He talked about the cold weather and mentioned that Brett was enjoying Arizona. He thanked the people who had emailed their intentions to attend today's meeting. Regrets from Val Zoerb, Brett Turner, and Terry Gunnlaugson. Brett sent a picture of himself and his golfing buddies in Arizona. They looked in fine fettle. 2. Approval of Agenda: Motion by Larry Weisgerber to approve the agenda. Seconded by Dorothy Caswell. MOTION: CARRIED 3. Introduction of Guests: No guests today. 4. Remembrance of Members: A list is sent to Ottawa for Sage magazine. If anyone becomes aware of members who have passed, please contact one of the Board members. 5. Approval of October 8, 2019 General Meeting Minutes: Moved by Albert Klippenstine, seconded by Brent Mathers. No discussion arising from minutes. MOTION: CARRIED 6. Correspondence: No new correspondence 7. Branch Report: A. Thanks to Louise Albertson for attending the Remembrance Day ceremony and placing the NAFR wreath in honour of Veterans. B. Thanks to Wendy Jarvin and her committee, comprised of Brad Kelso, Vern Anderson, Louise Albertson, and Conrad Albertson, for planning the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of our Branch. C. Thanks to Barry Caswell for meeting with political officials to advocate for NAFR’s national priorities prior to the Federal election last October. 8. Treasurer's Report: Linda Dueck said the 2019 Financial Statements are almost finalized. Stan Roszell and Al Robertson have volunteered to review the Financial Statements. 9. 40th Anniversary Celebration: Wendy Jarvin explained what she and her Committee have planned for this special milestone. The date is June 4, 2020 at Lady of the Lake. There will be a Meet and Mingle with a cash bar. Door prizes will be available. Tickets will be $15 per person and will be available at the Annual General Meeting on May 5th. Free tickets will be provided to persons who have been with the National Association of Federal Retirees for more than 30 years. 10. Budget 2020: The 2020 budget is projecting a loss of $6,431.68. We will be sending an Observer to the AMM in Ottawa with Brett Turner, at an estimated cost of $2,580.00. In addition, we budgeted $4100 for the 40th Anniversary celebration. Surplus funds that have accumulated over the years must be spent eventually because we are a non-profit entity. 11. New Business: Our next AGM is in May. In future years the AGM will be scheduled in April. 12. Lunch 13. Guest Speaker: Dr. Carine Minders gave an excellent presentation on Medical Assistance in Dying. There are specific protocols applicable to this choice and they were outlined in this area. Persons wishing more information can contact Medical Assistance in Dying (Winnipeg). 14. Charity - 50/50 Draw: We choose a registered charity annually for this donation. This year we will donate to Westman Prostate Cancer Support Group as suggested by Brett Turner. Moved by Kathy McCourt and seconded by Rhonda Mathers. MOTION: CARRIED 15. 50/50: $42 was won by Jessie McAdam 16. Next Meeting: May 5, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. at Seniors for Seniors. 17.
