As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to escalate, it’s becoming more and more difficult to sift through the information presented to us in this ever-changing landscape and to get information over the phone because call centres are overwhelmed. With that in mind, Federal Retirees has put together the following summary filled with important links and information:
Government of Canada travel advisories
The Government of Canada is now officially recommending that Canadian travellers abroad return to Canada and it is warning that it may not be able to repatriate Canadians who are unable to return on their own. Upon return to Canada, travellers need to self-isolate for 14 days. Some provinces and territories may have specific recommendations for certain groups such as health-care workers.
If you know of anyone who is outside the country, we recommend that you pass this message on to them immediately. Visit the Government of Canada’s travel and tourism website for the latest official travel advisories.
MEDOC travel insurance — coverage changes
With official travel advisories come changes to travel insurance coverage. On March 13, 2020, the Government of Canada announced a formal advisory limiting all non-essential travel outside of Canada. That announcement triggered special provisions in the MEDOC travel insurance policies many of you have purchased from the Association’s preferred partner, Johnson Insurance. Medical and trip interruption coverage is not available for travel bookings made after the travel advisory, and policy holders who departed before the announcement have 10 days to return to Canada before their coverage expires.
