With Newfoundlanders and Labradorians heading to the polls on Oct. 14, Federal Retirees sees an opportunity to create a healthier future for aging in the province.
As Newfoundland and Labrador heads to the polls on Oct. 14, Federal Retirees is calling on all candidates to prioritize the needs of older adults. More than 40 per cent of the N.L. population is 55 or older — the fastest-growing demographic in the province. Support for seniors in retirement is vital to our communities and economy. The next government must commit to building a healthier future for aging in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Issues
Reliable, timely access to health care
Primary care is essential for sustaining good health and promoting healthy aging, yet too many residents in Newfoundland and Labrador cannot access the care they need, when they need it. A poll by the N.L. Medical Association found that three in 10 residents don’t have a family doctor.
Healthy aging with dignity
Most older adults want to age in place, but limited home and community care services make this difficult. And when it’s needed, safe, quality long-term care must be available and guided by national standards.
The power of pensions
The rising cost of living is a top concern for many Canadians and can put older residents at risk, especially those with fixed incomes. Strong pensions provide stability, enabling seniors to manage expenses, preserve dignity in retirement and contribute fully to local communities.
