National Volunteer Week 2026: Recognizing the impact of volunteerism

This year, National Volunteer Week is part of a broader moment for volunteerism, alongside the United Nations’ International Volunteer Year 2026.

At the National Association of Federal Retirees, much of what we do is made possible by people who choose to contribute their time and experience in support of others. It’s something we see throughout the year, but National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) reminds us to pause and recognize it more intentionally.

Across the country, members of the Federal Retirees community take on a wide range of roles, building connections and advancing shared priorities that help improve the lives of older Canadians.

This year’s National Volunteer Week aligns with a broader moment for volunteerism in Canada. Through the “Ignite Volunteerism” initiative, and as part of the United Nations’ International Volunteer Year 2026, there is renewed attention on the role of civic participation in building strong, inclusive and resilient communities.

These national and global conversations reflect something we see every day in our own work: change is built over time, through the steady contributions of people working together.

That commitment has a tangible impact within our organization. It bolsters our ability to advocate on behalf of our membership, supports the delivery of important programs and services and helps ensure we can be effective, responsive and member-driven.

During National Volunteer Week, we extend our sincere thanks to all those who contribute in ways both visible and unseen. Your efforts make a difference not only within our organization, but in the broader communities you serve.
