In December, the Colchester-East Hants branch hosted a Christmas dinner at the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Association Wing in Truro. In addition to a festive get-together, the event was also an opportunity to honour a deserving volunteer recently recognized by the veterans ombud.

“I had the pleasure of attending this branch Christmas event in which the Veterans Ombud, Colonel (retired) Nishika Jardine, was in attendance to make a presentation on the work of the Office of the Veterans Ombud and to also present branch advocacy liaison Allan Wellwood with a Veterans Ombud Commendation Award, for his advocacy work with the National Association of Federal Retirees and RCMP veterans,” reports Nova Scotia advocacy program officer Michelle Langille.

In addition to the guest speaker and award ceremony, this event included a dinner and dance, as well as a presentation by branch president Mike Devine on Federal Retirees’ advocacy priorities — encouraging members to get involved — and about volunteer recruitment. Guests attending the dinner were also invited to join the branch.

The North Nova branch president and a new branch advocacy volunteer were also in attendance. Hosting a cross-branch event offers an opportunity for volunteers to share their successes and learn from each other, and it was also a wonderful way to wrap-up a successful year of advocacy for Federal Retirees’ Nova Scotia branches!
