The Algonquin Valley Branch recently hosted an evening information session to highlight the advocacy work of the National Association of Federal Retirees.

This information session was open to all members, and prospective members, as an opportunity to learn about the advocacy work that is being done to protect federal pensions and benefits while also highlighting past efforts the Association has undertaken.

“Advocating for improved retirement for all Canadians is fundamental to the Federal Retirees mission,” says branch advocacy liaison Nancy Gleason.

Gleason arranged the advocacy evening to ensure members and older adults in the area are aware of the Association, are familiar with their local branch and know how to get involved in the important work being done to improve the financial security, health and well-being of federal retirees and all Canadians.

“The Association advocates for governments at all levels to work together to reform older adult care and implement national standards for long-term and home care,” says Gleason. “This is part of a call for a comprehensive national seniors’ strategy that includes contacting members of Parliament, demanding that governments address the problems in long-term and home care once and for all, ensuring equitable and quality care for all Canadians.”

Over the course of the evening, national office advocacy coordinator, Amy Baldry, gave a presentation on the Association’s advocacy accomplishments over the past 60 years as well an overview of the current and upcoming advocacy campaigns. Baldry also answered questions from attendees as part of the presentation and spoke individually with attendees following the presentation while refreshments were served.
