Tell your representatives it’s time to implement national long-term care standards

Man and woman hugging.
Canada has long-term care standards. Now, it’s time to make them count.

In response to the devastating conditions in long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, Federal Retirees called on all levels of government to collaborate on a national review of long-term care and the urgent need for national standards for long-term care.

More than 18,000 of our members have joined the call for better long-term care.

With long-term care standards now announced, it’s time to redouble our efforts to ensure quality and equitable care for Canadians. And that starts with making sure those standards are implemented, enforceable and funded with accountability.

And we need you to make it happen. Tell your local representatives it’s time to implement and enforce national long-term care standards!

Why it’s important

Strong home care and long-term care systems are the foundation of our advocacy work calling for the implementation of a national seniors strategy, which would allow for a comprehensive and coordinated national approach, with dedicated funding and accountable goals, to ensure we meet the evolving needs of older Canadians.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that we cannot continue to ignore the long-standing issues in long-term and home care. Federal Retirees recognizes this and has a vision for reform in these areas of care.

But this is just a start. The next step is getting governments to commit to truly transforming older adult care. And for that we need your help.

Federal Retirees is advocating for governments at all levels to work together to reform older adult care and implement enforceable national standards for long-term care, with accountability tied to funding, as part of a comprehensive national seniors strategy.

This advocacy work will only be successful with the support and involvement of our members — like you.

Send a letter to your member of Parliament and your representative in your provincial/territorial legislature to let them know:

  • Now is the time to fix long-term and home care for good.
  • We need enforceable national standards with accountability tied to funding.
  • Safety in long-term care matters.

Use our easy form to contact your representatives today! We’ve already put together a message for you, but feel free to add to it or write your own.

Note: This letter will be sent to the federal seniors and health ministers, your local MP, and your local representative in your provincial/territorial legislature. A copy will also be sent to all federal seniors and health critics.
